AMONG the 61 victims from seven countries lured to work at the scam hub in Myanmar’s Myawaddy township, opposite Thailand’s Mae Sot town, released today (Feb. 6) are eight women, Naewna newspaper said,
Rachamanu Task Force revealed that the 61 victims who had been working at the notorious Shwe Kokko scam centre in Myawaddy were helped by the Myanmar junta and Karen Border Guard Force and handed over to Thailand at the Second Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge in Mae Sot during a visit to this border town by Deputy Prime Minister/Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai today.
The 53 male and eight female scam hub victims, 39 Chinese, one Kazakh, five Indonesians, one Ethiopian, one Pakistani, one Malaysian, and 13 Indians were personally received by Phumtham and his team.
They were all taken by Immigration Police to undergo legal procedure after which their embassies will be contacted to proceed further.
Thailand had yesterday morning cut electricity, Internet and fuel supply from five points along the Thai-Myanmar border to Tachileik, Myawaddy and Payathonzu townships amidst mounting concern that they are being used daily by suspected, transnational criminals preying on victims in Thailand and other countries.
