Demonstrators slam casino project, online gambling

THE Network of Students and People for Reform of Thailand and their allies held a demonstration at Oct. 14 Memorial today (Jan. 25) entitled “SAVE Thailand, no Online Gambling and Casinos Stop – Shinawatra System Stop – Online Gambling Stop – Casinos”  with participants steadily turning up from afternoon onwards, Naewna newspaper said.

This network has been holding activities on alternate Saturdays since the start of the New Year with two key speakers being Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jessada Tonawanik, chairman of the Faculty of Law, College of Asian Scholars and a former member of the Constitution Drafting Committee and Mr. Phichit Chaiyamongkol, a leader of now defunct People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD), commonly known as Yellow Shirts.

Most of the speakers attacked the coalition government headed by Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra for having on Jan. 13 approved in principle the draft Entertainment Complex Act and assigned the Council of State to review it.  The next move is possibly bringing online gambling above ground as the Digital Economy and Society Ministry believes doing so would be good for the economy.

An entertainment complex will definitely include a casino.

The speakers accused the government of not caring about people’s welfare as a casino would lead to many social problems cropping up.
