A CAR BOMB exploded in front of Tak Bai district chief’s residence in far southern Narathiwat province at 10 p.m. last night (Sep. 29) injuring two young men, Amarin TV said.
Initial investigation found that some houses near the residence of Tak Bai district chief, acting Sub. Lt. Jirass Siriwanlop, got damaged with two young men suffering burns. They were identified as Mr. Kantayot, 22, and Mr. Anuwat, 22.
Security officers have surrounded the car-bombing site and are moving to close off Tak Bai and Su-ngai Kolok municipalities. People and vehicles entering and exiting the two municipalities will be checked with checkpoints also being set up on all routes bordering neighbouring districts and along Kolok river.
Those who have to travel were told to take their ID card and car registration book along with them and allow for extra travel time. They were urged to not go anywhere unless necessary for now.
Two decades ago on Oct. 25, 2004 altogether 85 Thai citizens died in the Tak Bai massacre or Tak Bai incident amid insurgency in the far south, Wikipedia said.
On that day a demonstration of around 1,500 people took place in front of a police station in Tak Bai to protest the detention of six men. Several hours into the protest, the crowd attempted to cross the police barrier into the station. Police responded with tear gas and water cannons, and the crowd responded by throwing rocks. Police fired into the air and then into the crowd at head height, killing seven.
Almost 1,300 protesters were detained at the scene. They were ordered to strip to the waist, lie on their stomachs, and crawl to nearby trucks that would transport them to another site. Footage taken by journalists confirmed allegations that many protesters were kicked and beaten with sticks even after they complied with orders to lie on the ground.
The detainees were then stacked atop one another in trucks and transported to Inkayut Army Camp in Pattani Province. The drive took five hours, and by the time the trucks arrived at the destination, 78 detainees had died from suffocation or organ collapse.
