Nakhon Nayok resorts flooded in the middle of the night

SOME tourists staying in resorts at Nakhon Nayok suddenly found their rooms flooded in the middle of the night after Khun Dan Prakarn Chon Dam released water from midnight onwards without warning, Amarin TV said this morning (Aug. 5).

At 2 a.m. all Ruamkatanyu Foundation units in Nakhon Nayok were alerted by the rescue centre to get their boats out in case they had to rescue residents and tourists in a few resorts, with some having already evacuated their guests, after sudden flooding of unknown cause.

The rescuers then went on their boats to Hin Tang subdistrict, Nakhon Nayok city district, where they found a wide area had been flooded.

They talked to a tourist from Ayutthaya staying in one of the resorts who told them that he was sleeping in his room with a friend and only woke up when floodwaters had almost risen to their beds.

Upon coming out the two of them were hit with fast-flowing floodwaters that reached their waist, with one of their vehicles completely damaged while the other was not in a good condition.

This tourist added that no one gave them any warning before the resort got inundated.

Mr. Singha Butarka, 27, a worker at a resort here, said floodwaters started flowing at around midnight and rose high within minutes with the authorities not having alerted them in advance.

As the floodwaters started to decrease he managed to wade outside the compound and saw that Khun Dan Prakarn Chon Dam was releasing water from one of its flood gates. The floodwaters were high, if it had risen a metre higher the bridge in front of the dam would have got flooded

No one was injured but 12 resort rooms were damaged as were several vehicles, he added.

Owners of some riverside resorts in this area said usually when the dam releases water at night the officials would give advance notice.
