Ex-police chief’s spouse ‘seeks British nationality to escape money-laundering charges’

By Thai Newsroom Reporters

NIPAPAN SUKWIMON, spouse of former police chief Pol. Gen. Torsak Sukwimon, has quietly applied for British nationality in an alleged effort to escape money-laundering charges, said a famed lawyer today (Apr. 30).

Also known as “Madame Kookkai”, the spouse of the former police chief who has been suspended from duty in the face of alleged involvement in money-laundering charges recently visited England with alleged intent to acquire British nationality so that she could possibly manage to evade the money-laundering charges in Thailand at any given time, according to lawyer Sittra Biabungkerd who filed the charges against the couple and others at the Anti-Money-Laundering Office today.

Nipapan, suspected of having access to nearly 200 million baht in laundered money, had been personally associated with a woman police inspector who had allegedly funnelled the ill-gotten money via “horse accounts” to her, the lawyer said.

A range of 59,000 to 159,000 baht in cash was found to have been allegedly transferred to “Madame Kookkai’s” bank account via a chain of “horse accounts” on a monthly basis. Part of the ill-gotten money had been spent on the construction of a tourist resort in Pak Chong area of Nakhon Ratchasima and merit-making rituals at temples, among other businesses, he said.

The AMLO is yet to find out the sources of the money allegedly laundered by the spouse of the former police chief who has been hit with similar charges alongside deposed deputy police chief Surachate “Big Joke” Hakparn.

The ill-gotten money was largely believed to have been collected by groups of outlawed policemen from online gambling operators, among other illegal businesses nationwide, and funnelled to commanding police generals’ close relatives and subordinate police officers including those of Pol. Gen. Torsak and Surachate.
