Rainy season expected to start 1-2 weeks later than usual

AS SWELTERING summer drags on in Thailand, the Meteorological Department today (Apr. 27) warned that the longed-for start of the rainy season will be delayed by one to two weeks this year with the onset being the fourth week of May and will last till the end of October, Naewna newspaper said.

The total amount of rain across Thailand this rainy season will be close to average and similar to last year when 1 percent more than average was measured. However it was 6 percent higher than average throughout the year.

During the first half of the rainy season, from start to July, average rainfall is expected. However from August to late October 5 percent more than average rainfall is forecast.

Even so, it is likely that from around mid-June to mid-July the amount and distribution of rain will be low and this will lead to water shortage for agriculture in many areas, especially zones prone to droughts outside the irrigation system. People should therefore use water for maximum benefit during this period.

From August to October there will be heavy rainstorms and there is a strong chance of tropical cyclones moving through parts of Thailand which will bring torrential rain and flash floods in many areas.

Around one to two tropical cyclones will likely hit the Northeast and the North during August and September.

Rains will decrease in the North and Northeast in October with the two regions starting to get cold in the morning. Yet heavy rainfalls will continue in Central, Eastern and Southern regions over 60-80 percent of the area with torrential falls in some places.

This is because a high pressure system from China will be moving down to cover the upper part of the North and Northeast while a monsoon trough will cover the Central, Eastern and Southern regions.

Moreover a southwesterly monsoon moving through Thailand will start changing and turning into a northeasterly monsoon and covering that region instead.
