THE MYANMAR NAVY has recently put a couple of newly-built offshore patrol boats in commission, adding to a fleet of the western neighboring country’s naval forces, a navy source said today (Dec.27).
The commissioning ceremony for the Super Dvora offshore patrol boats, manufactured under license from Israel at Thanlyin naval dockyard, was held at Yangon naval base and attended by Myanmar State Planning & Administration Council vice-chair Gen. Soe Win and Myanmar navy chief Adm. Moe Aung, among others.
The latest couple of Super Dvora patrol boats are adding to a fleet of two others of the same type currently deployed by the Myanmar Coast Guard.
The Israeli-designed patrol boat which is normally armed with 33mm cannons could potentially be fitted with AGM-114 Hellfire missiles, among other armament.
The newly-built patrol boats, among other Myanmar navy vessels, would likely be deployed along the Bay of Bengal shores whereas the Arakan Army has joined other armed ethnic rebels in fighting against Tatmadaw government troops in Rakhine state.
The Myanmar navy currently deploys a couple of Chinese-built frigates armed with Chinese-made, surface-to-air and anti-ship missiles as well as a secondhand Russian-built, Kilo-class submarine and a Chinese-built, Ming-class submarine.
The commissioning of the Super Dvora patrol boats closely followed the recent delivery of a couple of Russian-built, Sukhoi Su-30SM Flanker fighters at Naypyidaw air base.
The latest couple of the two-seat, two-engine multirole combat aircraft have joined four others of the same type currently deployed by the Myanmar air force.
In addition to the newly-procured Sukhoi Su-30s, the Myanmar air force currently deploys Russian-built MiG-29 Fulcrum fighters and Chinese/Pakistani-built JF-17 Thunder fighters.
