110,000-plus debtors point finger at over 81,000 loan sharks

A TOTAL OF 110,000-PLUS people have so far claimed to owe a combined seven billion baht in illicit debt to 81,000-plus loan sharks in all provinces of the country, a senior government official said today (Dec.26).

Sutthipong Chulcharoen, undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior, confirmed that 110,531 people have informed the authorities since Dec.1 of the illicit debt which they have separately claimed to currently owe to 81,073 illegal money lenders.

Of the total of these indebted people with a combined 7.04 billion baht in illicit debt, 96,002 have notified the authorities online whilst 14,529 others have done so in person at district offices and police stations in all provinces nationwide.

That total included 6,948 Bangkokians being the country’s largest group of informal debtors with a combined 597 million baht in debt owed to 6,017 loan sharks.

Compromise-based negotiations between the debtor and the illegal money lender with district officials performing as mediators have so far completely settled a combined 65 million baht in debt owed by 575 out of a total of 2,511 indebted people, according to the undersecretary.

Most successful debt settlement negotiations have been so far held in Nakhon Sawan where a combined 44 million baht out of a total of 45 million baht in illicit debt owed by 16 people has been completely settled, he said.
