Tropical Storm Koinu to hit Thailand during Oct. 9-11

THE CEO of a public-listed engineering company issued a warning that a tropical depression hanging over the Pacific has turned into Tropical Storm Koinu and as it moves westwards will hit Thailand during Oct. 9-11, Matichon newspaper said.

Mr. Chawalit Chandrarat, CEO of Team Consulting Engineering and Management Plc, or Team Group, said Koinu is this year’s 14th tropical storm and has to be closely monitored and if necessary water drained from dams to receive fresh flow.

The Japan Meteorological Agency also said that a tropical depression turned into Tropical Storm Koinu at 3 a.m. (5 a.m. in Thailand) on Saturday, according to NHK.

Koinu has a central atmospheric pressure of 1,000 hectopascals. At its centre, there are sustained winds of up to 64.8 kilometres per hour and gusts of up to 90 kilometres per hour.

Winds are stronger than 54 kilometres per hour within 330 kilometres southwest of the storm’s centre and 220 kilometres to its northeast.

As plotted by Chawalit, Koinu’s path will be as follows:

– On Tuesday Oct. 3 it will strengthened to category 1 and 2 typhoon (with category 5 being the strongest);

– On Wednesday Oct. 4 it will bring torrential rain to entire Taiwan;

– On Thursday Oct. 5 it will intensify to category 3 and slam into Hong Kong triggering heavy rain after which it will continue moving westwards;

– If Koinu does not change direction it is expected to barrel into Hainan island next Saturday Oct. 7;

– On Monday Oct. 9 it will make landfall in Vietnam triggering heavy to very heavy rain in Hanoi and nearby areas and moderate to heavy rain in Laos too from Vientiane to Savannakhet down to Champasak.

In Thailand moderate to heavy rain will lash Northeastern Nakhon Phanom, Sakon Nakhon, Mukdahan and Ubon Ratchathani provinces, both the Andaman and eastern coast of the South including Bangkok;

– On Tuesday Oct 10 there will be heavy to very heavy rain in upper and central Northeastern region, the North, upper Central, both Andaman and Eastern coast of the South and Bangkok;

– Heavy to very heavy rain will continue on Wednesday Oct. 11 in the North, upper Central, both Andaman and Eastern coast of the South and Bangkok.
