‘At what hour is Chonlanan resigning?’ as Pheu Thai leader now No.1 hashtag

By Thai Newsroom Reporters

ALBEIT KNOWN AS NOMINAL leader of the Pheu Thai, Chonlanan Srikaew has been prevalently questioned on social media as to “at what hour” today (Aug.18) he is going to resign from the top post of the party under de facto boss Thaksin Shinawatra.

“At what hour of the day is Chonlanan resigning?” has come up as today’s No.1 hashtag, following yesterday’s confirmation by Pheu Thai wheeler-dealer Bhumtham Wechayachai that both “uncles’ camps” have already joined the Pheu Thai-led coalition government.

That referred to the Palang Pracharath led by Prawit “Uncle Pom” Wongsuwan and the Ruam Thai Sang Chart under de facto party boss/caretaker prime minister Prayut “Uncle Tu” Chan-o-cha.

Known as Thaksin’s right-hand man, Bhumtham said his camp has ultimately aimed at “melting the country’s 20-year-old political polarisation” by bringing both “uncles’ camps” on the bandwagon with all 314 MPs of the coalition partners set to endorse Pheu Thai candidate Srettha Thavisin for prime minister at next Tuesday’s joint House/Senate meeting.

Nevertheless, “At what hour of the day is Chonlanan resigning” as Pheu Thai leader has popped up as the No.1 hashtag as many people apparently wonder if he will ever keep his word as he repeatedly pledged during the run-up to the May 14 election to protest the possibility of his party joining hands with any of the “uncles’ camps” by resigning as Pheu Thai leader.

Critics on social media note that former Democrat leader/former prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva had publicly pledged to resign from the top post of the country’s oldest party if his partisan colleagues endorsed Prayut for prime minister following the 2019 election and he finally did.

Chonlanan is largely speculated to be given a ministerial seat in the Pheu Thai-led cabinet whilst concurrently holding onto the status of MP for his northern home province of Nan, no matter if he may sooner than later resign as Pheu Thai leader or not.
