AFTER a young Japanese woman was found dead in a Chiang Mai hotel room this morning (July 31) her distraught husband told police that she was depressed and had previously tried to strangle herself with a hair dryer cord but he managed to save her life, Thai Rath newspaper said this afternoon.
The unidentified 25-year-old woman was found by her husband in a luxury downtown hotel bathroom with her face down and a mobile phone charger cable dangling from her neck.
Police investigation showed that the two of them had checked into this hotel on July 29 and in the wee hours of this morning had gone to a convenience store returning to their room at around 3.45 a.m.
At 9 a.m. the husband alerted hotel staff after finding his wife dead in the bathroom.
Pol. Maj. Gen. Wirachon Boonthawee, deputy chief of Provincial Police Region 5, said the dead woman’s husband, who was weeping throughout while being questioned by police, related that his wife suffered from depression and had earlier tried to strangle herself with a hair dryer cord but he managed to save her life and then hid the hair dryer.
He then took her to the convenience store and fell asleep upon returning to their room.
Pol. Maj. Gen. Wirachon said he has ordered the police team to collect all forensic and other evidence including surveillance camera clips to determine whether this is consistent with the Japanese man’s testimony.
However he ruled out an outsider entering the room and killing the woman.
Pol. Col. Phuwanat Duangdee, head of Mueang Chiang Mai police station, said examination showed that the two of them returned to the hotel at around 3.45 a.m. and after that no one entered their room and it was morning when her husband alerted the hotel staff of his wife’s death.
He has now been taken to the police station for further questioning.
