A DETAINEE held at Koh Samui prison on drug charges and sent to a hospital for treatment after testing positive for Covid-19 has escaped with a 20,000 baht reward offered to anyone assisting in or furnishing information leading to his capture, TV Channel 7 said.
Pol. Col. Pongkajorn Sukksang, head Koh Samui police station, said policemen had been mobilised to quickly track down and arrest the detainee but upto now have not been able to recapture him.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the Thai male inmate, Mr. Thawatchai Kaewnopparat, or Toom Tam, 30, was arrested on drug charges at Mae Nam sub-district on Jan. 20. He was incarcerated at Koh Samui district prison but the next day was sent to Koh Samui Hospital for coronavirus treatment and somehow managed to escape.
Mr. Samart Sangampaisan, head of Koh Samui district prison, offered the 20,000 reward to anyone helping in the capture of this detainee with those with information urged to call 084-1917780.
Meanwhile the daily Covid tally dropped to 7,422 cases from 8,008 yesterday and fatalities to 12 from 16 taking the cumulative confirmed total since Jan. 1 to 224,529.
Of today’s batch of cases 7,161 were infected domestically while 261 foreign arrivals tested positive. In addition there were 2,017 people who tested positive via ATK test and are awaiting confirmation of infection.
Another 8,715 people have been cured with 83,014 still undergoing treatment.
Bangkok continues to have the highest number of cases with today’s total being 1,269, followed by Samut Prakan with 782, Phuket 605, Nonthaburi 478 and Chonburi 403.
