175 new Covid cases but university temporarily shut down

ALTHOUGH the daily coronavirus count remained low at 175 this morning (Feb. 12) Chulalongkorn University announced the closure of its campus in Bangkok till the end of this month after 20 cases were found within the large complex, Sanook.com reported.

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) said the addition of today’s cases took the cumulative confirmed total to 24,279 with 20,210 patients having recovered while 3,989 are still undergoing treatment. There were no additional deaths with the toll remaining at 80.

Of the 175 new cases 167 were domestic, with 47 found through surveillance and service systems, while 120 emerged through proactive search in communities.

Eighth overseas travellers were placed in state quarantine.

Meanwhile Chulalongkorn University announced yesterday that the campus is closed during Feb.12-28 to protect students after some staff residing at a dormitory there tested positive for coronavirus.

Proactive screening was undertaken after these cases emerged with 243 people being tested and three more found to be infected. The university authorities widened the testing to cover those who had close contact with them and one more case appeared taking the overall total to 20 people infected during Feb. 5-11 and all have been admitted to Chulalongkorn Hospital for treatment.
