IN investigating the cause of flash floods dumping thick layers of mud and rocks in Soi Na Nai, Patong beach town, Phuket, officials said a landslide occurred at adjoining granite hills that has a natural stream channel with torrential rain leading to the soil getting oversaturated and becoming unstable, Manager Online said this afternoon (Oct. 27).

Provincial authorities and relevant agencies have begun clearing the site after heavy rain and flash floods swept mud, debris and rocks to this alley while working out the precise cause of the landslide to prevent future occurrence and mitigate potential impact.

Preliminary findings indicate that the area consists of granite hills and may have once been the path of a stream. Prolonged, heavy rainfall can cause the soil to become saturated, increasing the likelihood of soil and rock movement. Further detailed surveys are required to accurately assess the site’s characteristics and the level of risk.

The Phuket Provincial Office of Natural Resources and Environment said that the Department of Mineral Resources currently operates nine monitoring stations for ground vibration and soil movement across Phuket. As these do not yet cover the affected area, discussions have been held with the Patong municipality regarding the installation of additional monitoring equipment to better track environmental changes and enhance surveillance capabilities.

Meanwhile, Patong municipality has mobilised personnel and heavy machinery to continuously clear mud and debris from the affected area. The road was closed from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.to facilitate these operations and ensure the safety of road users but was expected to reopen to the public at 5 p.m.
