AN ACTIVIST group and a lawyers association held three sports competitions in front of the Election Commission office to demand that the agency take legal action against 229 suspects in the 2024 senatorial rigging conspiracy, Naewna newspaper said late afternoon today (Aug. 30).
The polling agency last Friday postponed to Sept. 14 announcing its historic decision as to whether all the 229 suspects consisting of 138 out of the total 200 senators plus 91 Bhumjaithai members and other politically-associated persons will be eventually prosecuted in the Supreme Court on charges of conspiring to buy votes and rig the complicated, triple-tiered senatorial races two years ago.
The three sports events, a badminton championship, a ball toss game, and sky running, were held by iLaw activist group led by Mr. Yingcheep Atchanont and Human Rights Lawyers Association led by Ms. Passarawadee Thanakiwibul, or Mind, to pile pressure on the election commissioners to take action against all the suspects.
The competitions attracted a large number of participants including Mr. Parit Wacharasindhu, People’s MP and the party’s deputy leader, Mr. Chayapol Sathondee, People’s MP for Bangkok constituency 8, Ms. Pannika Vanich, spokesperson for the Progressive Movement, and some former senate candidates.
At 3:30 p.m., the entire group created the number 229 with their bodies, demanding justice in the senatorial rigging conspiracy, before peacefully ending their activities.
Yingcheep said that their only demand is for the EC to file lawsuits against all 229 accused individuals, leaving the remaining issues to be dealt with in court.
“However, if the EC chooses not to prosecute anyone, we will disclose the information we have about those individuals. Any minister who fears the disclosure of information in the case file should immediately call the EC and urge them to prosecute.
“I want all information to be revealed during the court proceedings. I confirm that we, the people’s movement, do not just have 90,000 pages of information; we have much more. If the EC doesn’t prosecute anyone, we will release everything. Furthermore, I urge citizens in all provinces to investigate their provincial senators and send the information to iLaw until the EC makes its decision,” he said.
As EC has issued a press release stating that the vote on this case will be held on Sept. 14 this is now a crucial period as there will be attempts to divert attention, he warned.
