AUSTRALIAN sprint champion Jemma Stapleton, 25, was killed in a motorcycle accident while on a family holiday at Koh Samui, 7news.com.au said today (June 12).
Numerous messages of condolence in honour of the sprinter, who was Stawell Gift finalist, poured in after news of her death spread.
While the cause of death has not yet been officially disclosed, an online fundraising page shared by her brother said she “tragically lost her life in an accident”. Created on Thursday, the fundraising page has already reached over its $100,000 goal, The Guardian said.
The sprinter from Melbourne came third in the 2025 edition of the Stawell Gift and made the final in this year’s race.
She celebrated her birthday on June 1.
In a video tribute provided to ABC News, Joel Stapleton said Jemma was more than a sister.
“She was my best friend, and I’m so lucky to have had her guiding me through my first 21 years,” he said.
“She was always there for me and whenever I needed help she was always there.
“For those that knew her, you know how lucky you were to have her in your life. Her smile was so bright that wherever she went you knew she was there.
“I’m so grateful that I can call her my sister.”
Stapleton’s partner, Tyler Gray, posted a tribute on his Instagram page.
“I can’t put into words the hurt I am feeling,” Gray wrote.
“You are the single greatest thing to happen to me and I am so grateful for the love we shared.
“I love you with all my heart.”
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was providing consular assistance to the family.
