DE FACTO Pheu Thai boss/parolee Thaksin Shinawatra smiled brightly when he showed up to report to the probation officer at Bangkok Probation Office 1 in Bangkok Noi district for the first time this afternoon (May 28) with this lasting only 10 minutes and Red Shirt supporters too had flocked in to encourage him, PPTVHD36 and Amarin TV said.
Released on parole on May 11 after serving eight months of a one-year sentence at Klong Prem prison, Thaksin has not been seen in public. His parole is conditional on wearing an EM bracelet on his ankle and reporters noticed that it was attached to his left ankle.
As he entered the building with his lawyer, Mr. Winyat Chatmontri, reporters asked him about his health and replied “Good, nothing wrong”. Mr. Sithi Suthiwong, the deputy director-general of the Department of Probation, was also present to receive him.
After only 10 minutes he walked down the building and greeted the Red Shirts who had gathered at the staircase, embracing and thanking them for waiting for him since morning then chatting briefly with them.
Before leaving, reporters asked how the reporting session went, as he had not been seen for 17 days, Thaksin smiled and replied, “As is typical for an old man, there was nothing much today. It was all formality.” He then got into his private car and left immediately.
Having to report to the probation officer once a month for four months until his sentence is completed on Sept. 9, his next appointments are on June 27, July 29, and August 31. However, each probation meeting can be postponed if necessary.
Thaksin had been finally returned to prison at the order of the Supreme Court to serve his one-year sentence on counts of convicted misconduct perpetrated during his previous premiership over the last couple of decades after he had allegedly taken legal loopholes to avoid being literally put behind bars and instead to grant himself the contentious privileges of staying in a premium ward at Police Hospital for a six-month period during which he had allegedly staged a thinly-veiled fakeout as a “critically ill patient.”
