Cambodia frees Thai man arrested while foraging in border forest

A THAI man who was arrested for illegally entering Cambodia after being caught foraging in a border forest was handed over to Thailand this morning (May 15), Naewna newspaper said.

This is a positive sign of cooperation between the two neighbouring countries and helps reduce tension along the border to some extent.

The release of  Mr. Yot Sainoi, 58, was processed by Maj. Gen. Kampanat Waphansu, chief of staff of the 2nd Army Region and Thai chairman of the Regional Border Committee (RBC), and Brig. Gen. Nith Narong, deputy chief of staff of the 4th Border Defence Force and Cambodia’s chairman of the RBC, at Chong Sangam border crossing, Sisaket province, at 11 a.m.

Yot, aka Uncle Yot who is in good health with no signs of injury upon his return to Thailand, had disappeared on April 25 after entering Huai Samroeng area in Khok Takhian subdistrict, Kab Choeng district, Surin province, with his motorcycle found parked at a forest.

The Commander of the 4th Border Defence Force had sent a letter to the Governor of Oddar Meanchey province, and coordination was carried out through the Cambodian Ministry of Interior, until the Cambodian side approved his return to Thailand.

Sources said the successful return of Yot is due to the close working relationship between Thai 2nd Army Region Commander Lt. Gen. Weerayuth Raksilp and Suranaree Task Force Commander Maj. Gen. Somphop Pharawetwith with the latter having actively pursued the Thai villager’s return to his homeland  and successfully facilitated coordination through the RBC mechanism to achieve a smooth outcome.
