Cambodia sends juvenile, adult offenders to support frontline forces

CAMBODIA is seen strengthening its border defences by transferring 790 juvenile and adult offenders jailed over gang-related crimes to detention and training centres along the border for vocational training after which help build border strongholds and support frontline forces, Amarin TV and Cambodianess.com said today (May 23).

According to a statement from Cambodia’s General Department of Prisons, 651 juvenile and adult offenders are being sent to Correctional Centre No. 4 in Pursat province, opposite Trat province, and another 139 to Oddar Meanchey provincial prison, opposite Buriram, Surin and Sisaket provinces.

Cambodian authorities stated that the project aims to “rehabilitate and modify behaviour” through vocational training in agriculture, vegetable farming, animal husbandry, and construction work, such as pouring concrete and building bomb shelters, to support troops at the frontlines.

Agricultural experts and field engineers are also participating in the scheme to closely supervise and train these offenders.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet had on April 26 instructed the Ministry of Justice, the army and police to consider deploying juvenile offenders who had caused unrest to assist at the frontlines, including building bomb shelters and other appropriate tasks to assist the army along the border.

Meanwhile, Col. Richa Suksuwanon, the Thai army’s deputy spokesperson, said there has been no information so far of Cambodian offenders operating along the Thai-Cambodian border with there only being news circulating within the neighbouring country of their transfer to other prisons, Naewna newspaper said.

However, as it is possible for such an operation to occur in future within Cambodian territory, the Thai army units at the border are closely monitoring the situation.

The public was reassured that Thai border defence forces have measures and contingency plans in place to handle any such situation.
