Cyber Police warn of online loan scam

CYBER Police urged those struggling financially and are looking for a loan to beware because what seems to be a lifesaver could actually be a scam, Naewna newspaper said yesterday (March 22).

In a Facebook post Cyber Police said, “Easy loans, quick approval – beware! Scammers are offering easy loans through social media and various apps.”

Metropolitan Police also said in a Facebook post that the public should beware of fraudsters offering quick loans at low interest rates by using the following tactic:

– Tricking victims to download a fake “quick loan, low interest rate” app;

– The victims are then asked to fill out information in the system;

– After that scammers secretly change the bank account number, shifting the blame to the victim;

– They trick victims to transfer money for various processing fees, ultimately draining their funds.

Observation:

– The perpetrators create an “official” LINE account, which will have a special symbol but cannot be called;

– Victims are asked to transfer money to the perpetrators before receiving a loan;

– The bank account (a third-party account) is a personal account, not an account under the name of an organisation;

– The loan is advertised as “easy loan, low interest, easy repayment.”

Precaution and prevention:

– Do not open or click links from suspicious SMS messages;

– If you receive a suspicious link, check it at http://www.who.is;

– Only download and install apps from the Google Play Store or Apple Store;

– Borrow money from legitimate financial institutions or loan companies certified by the Bank of Thailand.
