Urgent: Soldier loses leg after stepping on landmine

 

A SOLDIER lost his leg and suffered shrapnel injuries after stepping on a landmine at the Erawan operational base in Surin province at 6.44 a.m. this morning (Feb. 27), Amarin TV said.

The soldier, Pvt. Dechsak Trikham from the 233rd Infantry Company, is in critical condition as not only was his right leg severed but he also suffered shrapnel injuries on his left leg and left arm.

He was immediately given first aid then transported to Kab Choeng Hospital for medical treatment.

Meanwhile Pol. Maj. Gen. Pongsawat Chaibalan, commander of the Phayao Provincial Police, sent an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team accompanied by other officers to a mountain in this northern province to investigate after villagers found unidentified explosive devices there.

They cordoned off the area and after conducting a thorough inspection found one M26 fragmentation hand grenade and one WP smoke grenade. The EOD officers carefully destroyed them at the site.

The origin of the two explosive devices is as yet unknown with the authorities expediting investigation to determine if it is related to any individuals or incidents.

The public was warned that if they find any suspicious objects resembling explosives they should not touch or move them under any circumstances and immediately notify the authorities.
