HAT YAI remained critically flooded this morning (Nov. 25) with residents still trapped in their homes despite an urgent citywide evacuation order while a new wave of forest runoff worsened flooding in Trang with 12,000 households affected, PPTVHD36 and Naewna newspaper said.
Despite Songkhla Governor Ratthasart Chidchu ordering an urgent evacuation of residents throughout Hat Yai city, one rescuer, Mr. Ple Nakorn Silachai said in a Facebook post last night, “This is the worst in 14 years of flood relief efforts. It’s beyond my power or the government’s.”
His wife, Ms. June Kasama, posted a video of Ple Nakorn crying while rescuing flood victims because many were trying to leave their homes, screaming for help, but his team could not help them.
Meanwhile Trang is in crisis too with torrential rain continuing and leading to more runoffs from Banthat Mountains causing Trang river to overflow with 12,000 households affected and 65 schools closed.
While many areas are inundated, the flooding is heaviest in parts of Trang city district, particularly Bang Rak subdistrict where floodwaters gushed in last night and has reached one to three metres high forcing some residents to move up to the second floor of their homes.
Within the city district nine subdistricts, 43 villages, two municipalities, and two communities, totaling 613 households have been affected as Trang river continues to rise amid heavy rain.
In Palian district, forest runoffs from the Banthat Mountains have severely inundated many houses near the foothills. As a result, eight subdistricts, 42 villages, and 2,104 households have been affected.
In Yan Ta Khao district, where floodwaters had receded on Sunday, heavy rain triggered a new round of flooding of the entire district, particularly the municipal area with hundreds of households inundated. Now under water are eight subdistricts, the municipality, two communities, 41 villages, a total of 1,615 households.
