TORRENTIAL rain that lashed all 11 districts of southern Phattalung province all night and continuing today (Nov. 20) triggered heavy flooding in some areas with nearly 20 schools shut, Amarin TV said.
Several villages at Sri Nakarin and Kong Ra districts abutting Banthat mountain range were badly inundated as water gushed down lowland with residents rushing to move their belongings to high areas while some families were forced to evacuate their homes. Some household items got damaged because the floodwaters rose quickly and the currents strong.
Several roads in Phatthalung municipality remain flooded with floodwaters surging through a wide area particularly Ban Nang Lat Nuea community. Residents chaotically stacked sandbags in front of their homes as floodwaters rose rapidly while officials are urgently pumping it out.
This morning nearly 20 primary and secondary schools in Phatthalung Municipality announced their closure due to concern for student safety amid continuous rain and rising floodwaters.
Mr. Suchin Wajakit, Phatthalung’s acting governor, has ordered all districts and local administrative organisations to monitor the heavy rain and prepare to provide assistance all 24 hours, particularly in low-lying areas.
