HEAVY flash floods caused by Khao Lak mountain runoffs overflowing canals while running to the sea in Phang Nga province this afternoon (Oct. 22) inundated tourist areas alarming holidaymakers, Amarin TV said
The strong mountain runoffs turned red after spreading from the canals at around 2 p.m. then swiftly flowed into Khao Lak Centre shopping mall inundating restaurants, bars and motorcycle rental shops causing widespread damage. Floodwaters also gushed into nearby Khao Lak Seaview Hotel inundating the ground at the rear and causing a canal wall to collapse.
Both sides of the road from Takua Pa to Thai Mueang district were flooded up to a metre high for a distance of around 800 metres with vehicles unable to pass and this leading to a kilometre-long traffic congestion in both directions.
As floodwaters flowed so swiftly some small vehicles, particularly electric ones, and five to six motorcycles broke down. Khao Lak police station officers and officials from Khuek Khak subdistrict municipality rushed to help the victims.
Tourists scheduled to catch return flights home had to wade through the floodwaters to catch vehicles waiting on the other side of the road because the vans were unable to reach them.
Mr. Bancha Thanuin, Phang Nga’s deputy governor, along with Mr. Phichpat Rueangchatri, Takua Pa district chief, rushed to the area to provide emergency assistance.
Mr. Noppakhun Jaichuai, a vendor at Khao Lak Centre, said torrential rain caused the canals to overflow, which is unusual.
There were many tourists standing around watching and he told them to quickly get out of this area because the floodwaters were rising.
He added that he has never experienced anything like this before with this being the worst flooding in 30 years.
Meanwhile the Thai Meteorological Department said at 4 p.m. today that Tropical Storm Fengshen was around 220km from the Vietnamese city Da Nang with maximum sustained winds near the eye of the storm being around 90km an hour. Moving in a west-southwestly direction, Fengshen is expected to make a landfall over central Vietnam tomorrow.
However as a cold air mass from China is spreading over northern Vietnam and upper South China Sea, the tropical storm will not move into Thailand but there will be some thunderstorms in the Northeastern region today and tomorrow.
In the South, heavy to very heavy rain is expected in some areas during Oct. 22-26 due to a moderate monsoon trough passing through the central-southern zone, coupled with northeasterly winds covering the Gulf of Thailand and the southern region.
