7 Thai politicians not linked to a Cambodian scam case: South Korea

AFTER word spread in local media that the South Korean government is about to name seven Thai politicians as being involved with a Cambodian scam case, the South Korean embassy immediately issued a denial and branded it as fake news, Naewna newspaper and Amarin TV said today (Oct. 19).

In a statement published on the embassy’s Facebook page, the South Korean government said Prime Minister Kim Min-seok had not made any such comment

“The Government of the Republic of Korea strongly regrets the spread of such misinformation. The Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Thailand will take necessary measures, including legal, against such fake news,” the statement said.

Earlier Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said he had instructed the Foreign Affairs Ministry and his team to investigate the facts about these allegations particularly if any names or other information emerged.

“If there is any evidence of illegal activity, they would be prosecuted without exception,” he said.

Asked if this issue was raised during his telephone conversation with South Korea President  Lee Jae Myung last week, Anutin said he did not bring up this issue but if it is true he would have the opportunity to meet the South Korean leader at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting taking place in South Korea in two weeks’ time.
