Thai troops start dismantling former Khmer refugee camp

THE Thai army today (Oct. 21) started dismantling a former Cambodian refugee camp located within Thai territory at Sa Kaeo province to handover the land to local villagers, Amarin TV said.

Burapha Task Force sent Task Force 21 along with heavy machinery to this former refugee camp at Ban Nong Chan village, Non Mak Mun subdistrict, Khok Sung district, which is opposite Chouk Chey village in Cambodia’s Banteay Meanchey province.

The operation is aimed at clearing the area of landmines and other structures that could endanger future official actions as well as prepare to hand over the former refugee camp to Ban Nong Chan villagers, who are the rightful owners of the land.

This operation aligns with the Burapha Task Force’s border area organisation plan to ensure proper land use and long-term security.

Soldiers and officials have been demolishing old structures, removing debris and levelling the land since morning. Other troops and mine-clearing units had previously thoroughly inspected the area to ensure maximum security during the operation with checkpoints also set up to prevent unauthorized access to the area.

This former camp will undergo safety inspection and thorough reorganisation by relevant agencies before being returned to Ban Nong Chan villagers, allowing them to resume legal use of their land and ensuring stability for this community living at the Thai-Cambodian border.
