AFTER Thai forces along the border reported that four Cambodian troops had fired three rifle shots into Thai territory in Sisaket province this afternoon (Sep. 23) the Cambodian Defence Ministry this evening said in a statement that two shots were fired unintentionally but not into Thai zone, according to Amarin TV.
The 2nd Army Operations Centre said that the three rifle shots were fired by Khmer soldiers from Phu Phee after they moved close to the barbed-wire fence opposite Pa Man Base, Saothong Chai subdistrict, Kanchanalak district, apparently to test the reaction of Thai forces.
Thai soldiers exercised restraint, did not return fire, and no casualties or damage were reported.
This deliberate action constitutes a clear violation of the ceasefire agreement and demonstrates the Cambodian military’s lack of sincerity in honouring the commitments jointly signed at the General Border Committee and Regional Border Committee meetings.
In addition, one drone was detected operating in the Sam Tae area. Both Thai and Cambodian troops remained deployed in their respective defensive positions. Thai troops continue to man observation posts to monitor opposing movements and remain fully prepared to respond appropriately to any further developments.
Later the Cambodian Defence Ministry said shots were not fired into Thai territory but the units stationed in the area did fire two unintentional shots at 1.20 p.m. and 2.16 p.m., with the communications teams from both countries having resolved the matter.
Cambodia also reaffirmed its commitment to working with Thailand at all levels to promote peace, security, cooperation and development for the benefit of both countries.
