TORRENTIAL rain led to swollen Pa Sak river overflowing its banks and severely flooding Lom Sak city in Phetchabun, with the disaster likely to worsen, TV Channel 7 and Amarin TV said today (Sep. 1).
Aside from nine subdistricts of Lom Sak being being flooded, Nam Nao and Lom Kao districts are also inundated.
This is the worst flooding in Lom Sak in over a decade with several schools ordered closed.
Last night, the Pa Sak river embankment in front of Wat Phraison Sakdaram Phra Aram Luang collapsed at two spots, rapidly flooding the temple and houses. Lom Sak Municipality quickly deployed machinery to lift the cement barriers and close them, bringing the situation under control.
Throughout the night, Lom Sak Municipality officials, police officers, Kok Sai Lom Sak, Ruam Katanyu and Sawang Mongkol Foundation volunteers mobilised to help flood-hit residents, evacuating the elderly, children and bedridden patients from risk areas and helping people move their belongings to higher areas.
A survey this morning after the flooding had stabilised showed that the floodwater level at Lom Sak city hovered around one metre with residential areas, fresh markets, shops and several government offices inundated.
Relevant agencies are closely monitoring the situation as Pak Sa river water level is continuing to rise amid persistent rain with this having far-reaching impact on the economy, transportation and livelihood of Lom Sak city residents.
Mr. Pakphum Phumi, Lom Sak district chief, said despite floodwater levels likely to rise the district office remains open to the public and a Flood Disaster Command Centre has been set up.
