Fierce tropical storm to lash Thailand with heavy rain

A TROPICAL depression over the South China Sea this morning (Aug. 23) has developed into Tropical Storm Kajiki which is currently 639 kms from Da Nang, Vietnam, and will be bringing heavy to very heavy rain to most of Thailand which is also being affected by a southwesterly monsoon.

The Thai Meteorological Department said at 4 p.m. that Kajiki has maximum sustained winds of about 85 km/hr  with a speed of 30 km/hr.

Kajiki is the 23rd tropical depression in the Pacific region in 2025, and the 14th to develop into at least a tropical storm this season, according to Weatherzone.

This tropical storm is forecast to make landfall over upper Vietnam and upper Laos on Monday or Tuesday (Aug. 25-26). It will then move to Thailand and join up with a strengthening southwesterly monsoon prevailing over the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand in unleashing heavy to very heavy rain in the North, the upper Northeast, Central and Eastern regions including Bangkok and its vicinity from tomorrow to Wednesday (Aug. 24–27).

People in the country should beware of torrential downpours that may cause flash floods and overflows especially along the waterways near foothills and lowlands.

Waves in the upper Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf will rise to  two to three metres and above three metres during thunderstorms. All ships in the Andaman Sea should proceed with caution. Small boats should keep ashore at both upper Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf.

China, which calls Kajiki a typhoon, has activated a Level-IV emergency response to flooding and typhoons in Hainan Province.

The State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters has initiated emergency response measures and dispatched a work team to the southern province to assist with local flood and typhoon relief efforts, Xinhua said.

Meanwhile, central coastal localities in Vietnam have ordered a ban on vessels going out to sea, starting tomorrow as Kajiki  moves closer to Vietnam’s mainland and forecast to make landfall in the central region from Thanh Hoa to Hue by Monday noon, Vietnamese media reported.
