Security Council holding meeting as clashes erupt early in the morning

 

THE UN Security Council is set to hold an emergency meeting today (July 25) to discuss ongoing clashes between Thailand and Cambodia with fighting erupting at the border early this morning, Amarin TV and Naewna newspaper said.

The urgent session follows Cambodia’s direct appeal to the international community to intervene in the escalating border conflict.

Thai and Cambodian troops are fighting fiercely in many areas since early this morning, particularly Chong Bok and Phu Makhuea, with the 2nd Army Region initially summarising the situation as follows:

Summary of Cambodian losses:

– Area in front of Prasat Ta Muean Thom Temple, one person died, a soldier of the 42nd Infantry Regiment;

– Area south of Prasat Ta Muang Thom Temple, eight people died (three soldiers, four civilians, one monk);

– Phu Makhuea area, 14 Cambodian soldiers died from bombing, totalling 23 people.

In terms of the clashes initial reports indicate the following:

– At 4.30 a.m.: The Thai side detected enemy forces along the border in Kasat Suek area, 21st Infantry Regiment;

– At 04.30 a.m.: In the Kong Chak area, the 2nd Army Area Special Operations Regiment fired from our side along the borderline;

– At 04.50 a.m.: The Naresuan Force, 26th Infantry Regiment, saw six vehicles, believed to be tanks, parked in a row, opposite the clearance channel;

– At 04.54 a.m.: In the Kasat Suek area, both sides were stationed at the frontline, no clashes yet;

– At 05.23 a.m.: In the Chong Bok area both sides started exchanging gunfire;

– At 05.30 a.m.: In the area of Surupa Kluay, opened fire on Scorpions light tanks and fired to help troops near Prasat Ta Muen Thom Temple;

– At 05.25 a.m.: In Chong Bok fired weapons for support;

– At 05.35 a.m.: Troops in the area of Kasat Suek requested artillery support to shoot behind No Name hill;

– At 05.30 a.m.: Fired to destroy the tank position in the area opposite Chong Bok;

– At 05.50 a.m: Our side began to attack at Phu Makhuea.
