Cambodia shifting temple marker on Google Maps has no legal impact: Army

WHILE Cambodia has moved the location pin of one of three border temples to their territory on Google Maps this does not have any legal impact both domestically and internationally, the Thai army explained today (July 2), according to Amarin TV.

Maj. Gen. Winthai Suvari, the army spokesman, said there is concern that Cambodia is creating false evidence by showing Prasat Ta Muen Thom temple in its territory for use in the International Court of Justice and possibly suing foreign media plus creating misunderstanding that Thailand intends to invade and seize this temple whereas it is within Thai territory.

Early last month Cambodia referred the issue of this and two other border temples, Prasat Ta Muen Tot and Prasat Ta Khwai (called Prasat Ta Krabey in Cambodian language), and the Mombei area to the International Court of Justice.

In setting locations and border lines in Google Earth and Google Maps applications, the company uses data from the private sector, with the aim of providing the general public with information for travel. There are some discrepancies from the actual location in many instances, especially the imaginary border lines.

Importantly, data from Google Maps app will not have any legal effect at domestic or international levels, he added.

For any incorrect information in both apps, users can report it to the company and request a correction.

The Thai army confirmed that Thailand has all along had sovereignty over the area of Prasat Ta Muen Thom with this supported by geographical evidence and management of the area by Thai government agencies on an ongoing basis.
