Karen rebel leader may be nabbed for alleged involvement in transnational crimes

THE PHEU THAI-LED government was today (Feb. 10) encouraged to have Karen rebel leader Saw Chit Thu arrested on charges of alleged involvement in crimes perpetrated across the Thai-Myanmar border.

People’s MP Rangsiman Rome posted on his Facebook page to prompt the Pheu Thai-led government to manage to get an arrest warrant for Saw Chit Thu, head of the Karen Border Guard Force in Myawaddy township across the shared border from Mae Sot district of Tak in northwestern Thailand.

Saw Chit Thu has been allegedly involved in the illegal running of call-centre and human trafficking scams in Shwe Kokko, which is part of Myawaddy, preying on victims in Thailand, according to the People’s MP who concurrently chairs the House Committee on State Security, Border Affairs, National Strategies & National Reforms.

Rangsiman remarked that the current shutoff of cross-border power and fuel supplies from Thailand to Myawaddy and elsewhere along the shared border would not be enough to completely crack down on transnational crimes based in those Myanmar townships and preying on the Thais.

If Saw Chit Thu was eventually arrested by the Thai or Myanmar authorities, he would probably give tip-offs to the handout of payoffs for certain Thai government officials allegedly colluding with the scamming and human trafficking rackets in Shwe Kokko and elsewhere in the war-torn country, according to the People’s MP.

The opposition lawmaker cast a doubt that the junta-installed government in Naypyidaw could efficiently combat those transnational crimes without bringing such ethnic rebel leaders to justice.

In another development, de facto Pheu Thai boss Thaksin Shinawatra is speculated to leave for Naypyidaw shortly to hold an informal talk with Myanmar junta leader Min Aung Hlaing over chronic strifes between Myanmar government forces and armed ethnic rebel groups as well as transnational crimes based in the country’s border areas.

Thaksin, father of Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, has recently met with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia which currently chairs Asean to discuss the Myanmar issue, among others. The Thai billionaire power player has been named personal adviser to the Malaysian prime minister.

Given a criminal lawsuit filed against him in court, the de facto Pheu Thai boss needs prior permission from court to leave the country for a specified period of time.
