Koh Phangan flooded after heavy all-night rain

TORRENTIAL rain from last night till this morning (Dec. 28) on Koh Phangan island led to several residential areas and roads being flooded with the surge of floodwaters even sweeping a pickup truck into the sea, Amarin TV said this evening.

Mr. Noppadol Khaomali, Koh Phangan district chief, said the heavy all-night downpour caused large amounts of runoffs to gush down the hills to flow to the sea but as this took time to drain it led to flooding in the morning.

However the runoffs decreased after it stopped raining in the afternoon and along with it floodwaters in the residential areas too started dropping.

Even so officials are still closely watching the situation while assisting the residents because if it rains heavily again floodwaters in the communities could quickly rise.

Meanwhile two Facebook users, Ms. Yingkung Thamonzz and Mr. Nopphachai Yuennan, shared a video showing a white pickup being swept away by a fast-flowing floodwaters with this carrying the vehicle into the sea near Ban Tai subdistrict.
