FOREIGN AFFAIRS MINISTER Maris Sangiampongsa has summoned Myanmar Ambassador to Thailand Chit Swe for talks scheduled for tomorrow (Dec. 3) following last Saturday’s attack of the Myanmar navy on Thai trawlers in the Andaman Sea.
Maris is primarily expected to inquire with Chit Swe at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ headquarters the maritime incident in which sailors aboard three Myanmar patrol boats opened gunfire at three Thai fishing boats which led to the death of a Thai crewmember who had reportedly drowned in the sea and the injury of two others.
A bullet from the Myanmar gunfire literally scratched the head of a Thai skipper and caused a bleeding wound whilst the other Thai fisherman was injured by electrocution aboard.
Besides, four Thai fishermen were arrested alongside 27 Myanmar nationals hired as crewmembers aboard the Thai fishing boats. One of the Myanmar navy patrol boats towed one of the Thai trawlers to Yan Cheuk island off Kawthaung township in southern Myanmar.
Bangkok has already lodged a formal protest to Nayipidaw in the wake of the undue incident and strongly insisted that those Thai fishermen be unconditionally freed from Myanmar detention very shortly.
The Myanmar navy claimed the Thai trawlers had trespassed into Myanmar waters off Yan Cheuk island but the Thai side contended that they were only fishing in the Thai waters near Payam island off Ranong in southern Thailand.
