AT a merit-making ceremony marking de facto Bhumjaithai boss Newin Chidchob’s 66th birthday today (Oct. 4) party leader and Deputy Prime Minister/Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul was blessed to become prime minister, TV5HD said.
The ceremony held at Buriram United Football Club’s Buriram Castle, with Newin being the club’s chairman, drew many politicians, society’s luminaries, close friends as well as several senior Interior Ministry officials.
The event included an elephant ceremony passed down the Chidchob family for generations after which participants gave bananas to the elephants for good luck.
There was also a wrist-tying ceremony, whereby a string is tied on the wrist for good luck, with a monk named Khuru Pakam asked to bless Newin by tying one on his wrist.
Once the monk finished doing so, Newin asked him to also tie a string on Anutin’s wrist and loudly said, “Tie it so he becomes the prime minister, tie it so he’s great, tie it so he’s strong.”
Anutin also tied a string on Newin’s wrist, wishing him good health and that his wishes come true.
