A HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES meeting will likely be held on the upcoming Friday to pick a new prime minister in place of the court-deposed Srettha Thavisin.
According to chief government whip Wisut Chaiyanaroon, the House will likely convene on Friday to name a new head of government to replace Srettha who had been practically attached to the Pheu Thai under de facto party boss Thaksin Shinawatra.
Srettha was today (Aug 14) deposed from power by the Constitutional Court on grounds of severely breaking the coup junta-designed constitution and code of political ethics.
A simple majority out of a total of 494 currently performing MPs on both sides of the House chamber aisle will vote a certain person for head of the executive branch from among partisan candidates contesting last year’s general election.
Those include Thaksin’s daughter/Pheu Thai leader Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Pheu Thai MP Chaikasem Nitisiri, Bhumjaithai leader Anutin Charnvirakul, Palang Pracharath leader Prawit Wongsuwan and Ruam Thai Sang Chart leader Pirapan Salirathawipark.
Thaksin’s party with 141 MPs under command remains core of the current coalition government whilst the Bhumjaithai with 70 MPs under command of de facto party boss Newin Chidchob, the Palang Pracharath with 40 MPs and the Ruam Thai Sang Chart with 36 MPs under de facto party boss/former coup leader-turned-prime minister Prayut Chan-o-cha are the second, third and fourth coalition partners respectively.
The People’s Party with 143 MPs, all of whom had skipped over from the court-dissolved Move Forward, will likely be kept at bay on the opposition bloc whilst the Democrat Party with 25 MPs led by Chalermchai Sri-on is allegedly looking to join a post-Srettha coalition government.
