3 lese majeste detainees still on hunger strike as one other dies

By Thai Newsroom Reporters

THREE DETAINEES facing lese majeste charges are still reportedly on a hunger strike in prison whilst one other was pronounced dead today (May 14).

The three street activists earlier arrested and currently detained in prison under the lawsuits pertaining to lese majeste, also known as Section 112 of the Criminal Code, have been fasting since earlier this year. The trio are reported among at least 41 political activists currently detained in jail on lese majeste charges.

The other detainee, namely Netiporn Sanehsangkhom, also known as Bung Thaluwang, has died today after 110 days of the hunger strike which she held at a hospital in the premises of the prison. The 27-year-old woman activist was rushed to Thammasat Chalerm Phrakiat Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

In 2022, Netiporn was among nine young activists arrested and detained on lese majeste charges after they had conducted an opinion poll in Siam Paragon area pertaining to royal motorcades in relation to Bangkok’s road traffic.

Former MP Kannika Wannish, now member of Progressive Movement Group, posted on her X page to express doubt that members of Thai society would ever understand that nobody should be detained to jail or die just because they may have adopted political views in opposition to those of the authorities.

Another adolescent activist Thanalop “Yok” Phalanchai posted on her Facebook page to sarcastically wish Thailand good luck in being finally named a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council, given Netiporn’s contentious detention leading to her death.
