FIREFIGHTERS battling a big blaze at a tank farm within Map Ta Phut port in Rayong’s Mueang district since morning succeeded in controlling it at 4.50 p.m. after it had raged for six hours, TV Channel 7 said today (May 9).
Looking at Map Ta Phut Tank Terminal Co. Ltd. complex from a high angle no more fire nor smoke could be seen with foam and fire retardant used to bring the inferno, which started at 10 a.m., under control.
A TV Channel 7’s reporter at the scene said two tanks appeared to have been damaged. However earlier some local media outlets had reported that a third tank had caught fire and exploded.
The first tank that caught fire is 18 metres high with 30-metre diameter and held 2,500 cubic metres of pyrolysis gasoline while the second tank, also of the same size, contained a different substance.
One person died in this inferno and four were injured with this being the second time a fire broke out at this complex with three people having died in the 2021 blaze.
