Foreigners assault Phuket policeman after being chased over traffic violation

TWO motorcycle-riding foreign men refused to stop when hailed to do so by a Phuket traffic policeman instead zoomed ahead and upon finally being caught assaulted the officer, locking him in a chokehold, with a shot being fired from his pistol as they fought over the firearm, Amarin TV said today (Mar. 17).

This TV channel’s news team verified that the incident did actually occur at approximately 3.50 p.m. yesterday after E-Sor web page broke the news by sharing a photo with a caption saying, “Here in Phuket… foreigners are bold and badly attack Thai police. Photo owner: Thapapong Trs.”

This led to a large number of Thai netizens criticising their behaviour.

Some of them said the two foreign men, later identified as Mr. Hamish Day, 36, and Mr. Oscar Mattson Day, 38, both from New Zealand, should be punished similar to Mr. Urs Fehr, or David, 45, who allegedly kicked Dr. Thandao Chandam, attached to Dibuk Hospital, as she sat on the stairs leading from his villa to Cape Yamu beach on the night of Feb. 29.

Pol. Lt. Somsak Noo-iad, attached to Chalong police station, had spotted the two men riding their motorcycles at high speed and not staying close to the left side of the road just in front of this police station so hailed them to stop.

However the two men just zoomed away with Pol. Lt. Somsak chasing them. When he caught up he filmed them with his mobile phone camera which angered the two foreigners and they then snatched his cell phone and assaulted him, and in doing so tried to grab his pistol leading to one shot being fired, then locked him in a chokehold.

Other policemen from Chalong police station soon arrived and arrested the two men.

They have been charged with jointly stealing property, fighting and obstructing as well as injuring a police officer plus driving without a licence.
