ANOTHER Swiss man has been charged with assaulting a Thai woman plus not cooperating with the police by refusing to be fingerprinted and signing documents in southern Trang province last evening, Amarin TV said today (Mar. 6).
The Swiss man, Mr. Dieter Matthias Strausmann, 62, who is residing in this southern city on a retirement visa, left his victim, Ms. Natchanan Khikkam, 58, with a broken nose, her eyes and back swollen as well as tightness in the chest and she now has to undergo medical treatment for at least one month.
Police said even though there were Tourist Police officers and an interpreter to talk to Strausmann in English, he remained quiet and tense, not trusting anyone only occasionally talking to the interpreter. He also refused to be fingerprinted or sign documents to acknowledge the charges and also felt he had been violated because his photo was taken.
Natchanan related that she had wheeled a trolley into the hypermart to buy some soft drinks but it hit the shelf. She picked up a bottle of water and as she picked up and held the second bottle, the foreigner walked up and pressed himself against her from behind, then pressed against the trolley until it swung out.
He did not say anything and pressed again until the trolley started rolling away.
She added that she said in English, “Excuse me” but he did not not stop and squeezed one more time and tried to reach out.
She then said “Excuse me” again but he did not stop, so she said,”Please be polite.”
She added that the foreigner then turned and looked at her face so she pushed the trolley to move away but he followed her and said something but not in English.
She then said loudly with emotion, “Be polite please. I repeat, can you be polite? Why do you do this to Thai people? I’m Thai. You’re a foreigner. Why do you do this to me?”
He shouted at her but again in a language she could not understand and when he finished he punched her.
She was dazed because she did not think he would punch her but he continued hitting her face hard and there was no way to dodge.
He then walked away, but as she could not accept being beaten in this manner she threw the bottle of water she was holding at him, but it fell on the ground.
He turned around and grabbed her and punched her again. She fought back but he pushed her to the ground and pressed his knee on her windpipe. When she screamed he let her go.
As she sat on the ground she looked around she saw that there were people watching all around but no one came to help.
When she cried out for help an employee then came with tissue paper to help stop the bleeding and called the emergency 1669 number for help.
