A TRUCK DRIVER who zoomed to escape a police search then led them on a wild 20-kilometre chase during which he hit over 20 vehicles and slightly injured three policemen now faces five charges, TV Channel 7 said this evening (Dec. 4).
Pol.LCpl. Peerapat Ongphudee, head of the traffic group on duty at Bang Na expressway, said he noticed that the truck looked suspicious as it had a sticker of a neighbouring country’s flag on it with the driver, later identified as Mr. Chainarong, 28, having dyed blond hair so he hailed it to stop and asked for his driver’s licence.
However the driver said he did not have one and quickly sped off, but before he did so Pol.LCpl. Peerapat said had got whiffs of drugs.
The chase that ensued ended near BTS Thippawan station, Samrong Nuea, Samut Prakan city, continuing even after police had shot the truck’s tyres as he was still able to drive on.
During the chase he had hit a police sedan, a rescue vehicle, a reporter’s car and some local residents’ vehicles totaling nearly 20.
Police found three methamphetamine tablets in the truck but the suspect maintains he was not high on drugs and drove away because he had panicked.
He now faces five charges including fighting and obstructing police officers while performing their duties, driving a vehicle after consuming drugs, possessing methamphetamine pills – a category one drug, driving recklessly without considering the safety of others and driving carelessly causing damage to government and private property.
It is still being considered whether a charge of attempting to kill police officers while performing their duties too be will be filed.
