A SOLDIER and a cadet died this morning (Feb. 14) when a light tank they were travelling in overturned during a joint military, police and civilian exercise in Lopburi province, Matichon newspaper said.
This year’s joint exercise by King’s Guard, 2nd Cavalry Division, was participated by soldiers and cadets from all three military branches including military medical students and army nursing students capable of military operation and helping people during disasters and police officers.
However the unexpected occurred early this morning when the Scorpion light tank carrying three military personnel was just a kilometre away from the destination, which is Hill 129, while coming in the opposite direction was a FTX truck after dropping off cadets to watch the exercise with only the driver there.
This stretch is a sharp curve and amidst poor visibility both vehicles swerved left. However the light tank climbed over an earthen barrier, plunged down a cliff and flipped over upon landing on an earthen road below.
Sergeant Major First Class (SM1) Sangha Joito and cadet Phuwanai Kamlangdee got injured and were rushed to Ananda Mahidol Hospital where they later died.
