MAVERICK MP THAMMANAT Prompao has quietly brought a dozen legislators including himself back to the Palang Pracharath where they have earlier belonged in bid to help with party boss Prawit Wongsuwan’s design to rise to power after the upcoming general election.
Thammanat and 11 other MPs under his command have already departed from the little-known Thai Economic Party to the largest coalition partner under whose tickets they all are seeking re-election.
Two other MPs attached to Thammanat had earlier hopped over to the Palang Pracharath headed by Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan who is contesting the general election as partisan contender for prime minister.
An “expulsion” of all the MPs in Thammanat’s clique from the Thai Economic had been formally manipulated under a legal loophole so they could hop over to the Palang Pracharath without immediately losing their MP status.
Thammanat earlier said he would certainly not seek any executive post in Prawit’s camp and only intended to help the Palang Pracharath boss find his way to premiership.
Early last year, Thammanat who used to act as Palang Pracharath secretary-general had led an exodus of 21 MPs by way of an “ouster en masse” from Prawit’s camp in the face of unsettled conflict of interest among its rank and file a few months after he had been deposed as deputy agriculture & cooperatives minister by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha.
Prayut had apparently suspected Thammanat of hatching a hush-hush plot to have a number of coalition and splinter-party MPs abstain from voting in his support following 2021’s censure debate.
The seven other MPs who had been ousted from Prawit’s camp alongside Thammanat had opted to join the Bhumjaithai, steered by de facto party boss Newin Chidchob.
