THE DAUGHTER of a woman jailed on charges of supporting drug-related offences submitted a complaint to the Justice Ministry today (Apr. 21) accusing a female guard at the Thonburi Women Correctional Institution of having demanded money several times to take care of her mother, Amarin TV said.
Accompanied by Mr. Ronnarong Kaewphet, chairman of the Social Justice Campaign, Ms. Pornphimon Suansamran, 31, submitted her complaint to the ministry’s deputy permanent secretary Mr. Wanlop Nakbua and in doing so said her family had previously complained about the unnamed guard several times but she seemed to be influential as no action was taken.
She was also concerned about the well-being of her mother as the family had been forbidden from visiting her and even though video calls were allowed according to correctional regulations, they were not permitted to make them.
Pornphimon said her mother was imprisoned on June 23, 2021 and on Nov. 21 the female guard contacted her father for the first time asking for 1,000 baht to arrange for a small job for her mother in the prison and to bring the money to her home, which he did. However they later found out that she was working normally in jail.
Since then her father had received several calls demanding money and one time this guard allegedly told him to bring a long-sleeve shirt for her mother to wear but they later found out that she was wearing a regular prison uniform.
Ronnarong said altogether 6,200 baht was paid to this guard nine times for various claimed expenses such as giving the imprisoned woman cake, grilled fish and papaya salad, with there being audio clips and money transfer slips to support their accusation.
Wanlop said his ministry paid attention to guards demanding money from inmates’ relatives and initially this guard had been suspended with the submitted evidence being examined and a committee to be set up to undertake disciplinary and criminal investigation.
