Cabinet green light for slightly changing Bangkok’s name

A DRAFT announcement on slightly changing Bangkok’s name from Krung Thep Maha Nakhon; Bangkok to Krung Thep Maha Nakhon (Bangkok) was approved by the Cabinet yesterday (Feb. 15), Thai Rath newspaper said today.

This small change to the capital’s name was proposed by the Office of the Royal Society of Thailand and then sent to the committee reviewing draft laws and subordinate legislations with the observations of the Foreign Affairs Ministry taken into account.

The draft announcement cancels the announcement of the Prime Minister’s Office on determining the name of the country, territory, administrative areas and the capital dated Nov. 9, 2544 with the announcement of the Royal Society of Thailand determining the name of the country, territory, administrative areas and the capital dated Sept. 1, 2021 brought into effect.

Ms. Ratchada Thanadirek, deputy spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, clarified via a Facebook post today that not much had changed with the Royal Society of Thailand having tweaked the English transliteration from Krung Thep Maha Nakhon; Bangkok to  Krung Thep Maha Nakhon (Bangkok) putting the original name in parentheses.

The Royal Society of Thailand too today clarified via Facebook that “Krung Thep Maha Nakhon ” can be referred to by both Krung Thep Maha Nakhon and Bangkok.
