POLICE raided a restaurant at the entrance of Sukhumvit Soi 12 at 10:45 p.m. last night (Oct 16) after a tip-off that there is a risk of Covid-19 spreading within the premises and rounded up 116 Thais and foreigners, Sanook.com said this afternoon.
At the two-storey restaurant, approximately 40 square metres a floor, the Lumpini police team found 89 Thai male and female diners as well as 27 foreigners with there being 50 beer barrels and 60 glasses of alcoholic beverages placed on various tables.
There were also six empty beer bottles behind the beverage counter and 85 bills that showed that alcoholic beverages had been served.
This gathering is in violation of the emergency decree restricting gatherings and activities that would contribute to coronavirus spreading.
Police arrested the restaurant manager Mr. Sirichai (surname withheld) on the charges of violating Section 9 of the Emergency Decree on Public Administration in Emergency Situations B.E.2548 (2005) governing the sale of alcoholic beverages, Section 52 of Communicable Diseases Act 2558 (2015) and BMA Announcement No. 44 on restaurant opening hours.
The 116 diners were charged with joining a gathering of more than 50 people in the maximum and strict control zone that could lead to Covid-19 spreading.
Meanwhile the Public Health Ministry said this morning that there were 10,863 new Covid cases and 68 deaths with this taking the cumulative confirmed total since April to 1,754,838 and since the start of the pandemic 1,783,701.
Of the new batch of cases 10,799 were among the general public while 64 fell sick in prisons and detention centres and seven foreign arrivals were quarantined.
The 68 additional fatalities raised the death toll to 18,273.
Another 10,383 patients were cured taking total recoveries since April to 1,657,638 with 107,790 still undergoing treatment.
