Gold shop robbery suspect nabbed while trying to flee to Laos

POLICE have arrested a suspect in the heist of 221 baht weight gold jewellery worth 6.5 million baht from a gold shop at Tesco Lotus Wang Hin branch in northeastern Loei province just as he was about to cross the border to Laos via natural routes, Thai Rath newspaper reported this afternoon (Sept. 29, 2020).

In announcing the arrest of Mr. Chaimongkol Chaiboonupatham, 38, at 1 p.m. today Metropolitan Police Bureau said Pol. Gen. Suchart Thirasawat, the deputy national police chief, is travelling to Loei to bring the suspect back to Bangkok for questioning.

The robber, who wore a wig and a white jacket which police later seized, used a pistol to rob Yaowarat Bangkok gold shop at this mall over the weekend. The shop is insured for robbery.

Investigation revealed that the suspect acted alone and after the robbery he escaped via a road next to Lad Phrao canal and then discarded his white jacket and rode off on a black motorcycle without a licence plate.

He then parked and left this motorcycle at an apartment building in Soi Senanikom 1 in Lad Phrao area. At 4 p.m., after changing his clothes and shoes as well as removing his wig, he took a taxi to another department store in Lad Phrao area.

He then went to Bangkok Bus Terminal (Mo Chit) where he purchased a ticket and travelled to Loei province.
