Nigerian romance scammers arrested in Phuket

POLICE at Phuket’s popular Patong beach arrested two Nigerian men on the charges of fleecing several women who they had ensnared with their romance trap and also overstaying in this country, Khaosod newspaper reported today (Sept. 13, 2020).

The two men, aged 21 and 19, were arrested in their hotel room at this beach after Patong police were tipped off by Songkhla immigration police who had already arrested some romance scammers.

Their modus operandi is to post handsome photos of men at their Facebook page and then luring young women to fall in love with them.

Once these women were firmly hooked, the scammers usually told them they were sending them a very special gift, and then asking them to transfer money to either pay for the difference or that some cash was required to ensure this gift got through the customs without inspection.

Once they got hold of the money, they dumped the women.

Patong police investigation revealed that some Africans were hiding out at this beach and they frequently withdrew money from different ATM machines. CCTV clips pointed to these two men after which police raided their hotel room and found that they had overstayed in this country and were likely part of a romance scam network here.
