WITH 6,628 polling stations across Bangkok having closed at 5 p.m. and vote counting underway amidst heavy rain, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) said unofficial results are expected at around 10 p.m., PPTVHD36 said this evening (June 28).
As of 7.20 p.m. former Bangkok governor Chadchart Sittipunt (independent) was way ahead with 292,917 votes (65.0%), followed by Ms. Mallika Boonmeetrakool Mahasuk (independent) with 61,176 votes (13.6%), Mr. Chaiwat Sathawornwichit (People’s Party) 35,808 votes (7.9%), and Mr. Anucha Burapachaisri (Democrat Party) 21,120 (4.7%).
At polling station 3 in Sao Chingcha subdistrict, Phra Nakhon district, located in front of the Bangkok City Hall, officials announced the closure of voting for the Bangkok governor and city councillors at 5 p.m.
However just one minute before closing a voter ran in through the rain to cast his ballot with officials then allowing him to do so and closed the voting for the second time.
Meanwhile, Mr. Narong Ruangsri, BMA’s permanent secretary, said overall, the election proceeded smoothly, despite several incidents throughout the day, including a fire, heavy rain, and strong winds.
At around 9.30 a.m., a fire broke out in Chaeng Wattana Soi 10, Lak Si district. Officials were able to control the fire within approximately 15 minutes, and it did not affect any polling stations in the area.
Later, between 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. several areas in eastern Bangkok were hit by strong winds, causing some campaign signs to fall. In Bang Kapi district, a signboard fell on a voter, causing minor injuries with officials and police from Hua Mak police station quickly taking the injured person to the hospital. Similarly, in Sam Sen Nok subdistrict, Huai Khwang district, strong winds toppled a signboad, but the district office promptly repaired it, allowing the election process to proceed as normal.
