THE Airport Rail Link management confirmed that all stations are operating normally after a deadly train-bus collision at Rama 9 – Asoke-Phetchaburi intersection that killed eight people with around 25 others being injured, Amarin TV said this evening (May 16).
In a Facebook post this railway line’s management said, “Dear passengers, the Airport Rail Link expresses its condolences regarding the train-bus collision at the Asoke-Din Daeng intersection near Makkasan Airport Rail Link station.
“However, the Airport Rail Link continues to operate normally. Passengers can use all stations at this time.
“We express our deepest condolences to all those affected and apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
Deputy Transport Minister Siriphong Angkasakulkiat visited the scene of this bad accident to investigate and said initial reports indicate that eight people had died and approximately 25 others were injured, with victims being transported to various hospitals for treatment.
The Bangkok Mass Transit Authority is providing full support while the cause of the accident is awaiting official confirmation, he added.
The Public Health Ministry has ordered Lerdsin, Nopparat Rajathanee and Rajavithi hospitals to prepare to accommodate the injured, including emergency rooms, operating rooms, ICUs, and burn units, along with sufficient blood reserves.
Meanwhile Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul who is currently in Phetchabun province to visit Si Thep World Heritage Site ordered relevant agencies to urgently assist the injured, care for the families of the deceased, facilitate medical treatment, and thoroughly investigate the cause of the accident, while closely monitoring the situation.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt is also at the scene of the fatal accident involving a freight train originating from Chachoengsao province and bound for Bang Sue station colliding with air-conditioned bus number 206, running on Mega Bangna-Bang Khen route, which led to a massive fire spreading out,
The severe fire engulfed the bus, leading to the numerous fatalities and injuries. In addition, several motorcycles and cars involved in a secondary accident were found near the scene, along with additional fires.
Meanwhile, officials from the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation unit, Makkasan police station, and various foundations mobilised to control the situation. They successfully brought the fire under control and are currently working on the wreckage.
A dashcam video from a nearby vehicle captured the incident. It shows the bus stopped in the middle of the train tracks as the train passed. During the collision, two people were thrown through the front windows of the bus, sustaining serious injuries. The railway crossing barrier was not in place.
